Coastal Cleanup

Saving the Sound one pound of trash at a time....

COASTAL CLEANUPS:  Nantucket Soundkeeper organizes annual beach and waterway cleanups in April to celebrate Earth Day, and in September to coincide with the annual Fall Coastsweep events in Massachusetts. Soundkeeper staff and volunteers are instrumental in covering numerous locations on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, and to date, have collected over 1,750 pounds of trash and debris since 2006. In addition, Soundkeeper has worked with children from a local summer camp, Camp Wingate Kirkland, to clean up local beaches on the Sound as part of their community service work.  The campers collected over 100 pounds of trash during the two-day program.  Publicity from our Soundkeeper cleanups resulted in a donation of vinyl gloves from the company, Don the Glove, for our coastal cleanups.    Plans are already underway to participate for the fourth year in the International Fall Coastsweep cleanups in 2008.
