In 2005, the Waterkeeper Alliance licensed the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound as the "Nantucket Soundkeeper", the official steward of Nantucket Sound. The designation empowers Nantucket Soundkeeper to act as protector and advocate for the marine waters bounded by Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
Co-founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. in 1999, the Waterkeeper Alliance has grown into a highly-respected environmental organization with more than 160 member programs on six continents that protect vital bodies of water and waterways. The Waterkeeper Alliance provides legal, scientific and policy expertise to their grassroots “keeper” organizations fighting for clean water in their communities around the world.
